St Bartholemew’s Church, Wilmslow
As part of a major programme of refurbishment, the majority of the internal stonework of the chancel, nave, aisle and tower was cleaned using the Clean-Film cleaning system. This involved the application of a latex coating, which removed any dirt as it was peeled away from the surface of the stone. This method was ideal for this location as it is a very clean way of cleaning stone in an environment where there were sensitive historic fabrics. It also eliminated the possibility of moisture being absorbed by the stonework and was able to effectively clean the most detailed stone carving. As work could be carried out from an aluminium tower, there was no need for expensive scaffolding, and also meant cleaning work could be easily coordinated with other ongoing works in the building.
The DOFF system was also selectively used on areas of heavy carbon staining caused by a previous heating system. The DOFF system was used with the integral vacuum system which does not allow steam to go into the air and prevents run off that may damage other fabrics.
